Requirements for Backflow Testing

Annual Backflow Prevention Assembly Testing Requirements

All customers who own a backflow prevention assembly must have it tested annually. Log in to your Manatee County Utilities online account to check the date and results of your most recent test.

Certified Backflow Preventer Testers

Testing must be conducted by a contractor registered with the Manatee County Cross Connection Control office. The contractor must have the following:

  • A valid plumbing license
  • Current insurance
  • Certification for backflow preventer testing
  • A calibrated test kit

For fire line backflow preventers, a State Fire Marshal certificate is also required.

You can view the lists of certified testers here:

Prices vary by company, so it’s recommended to get multiple quotes.

If your assembly fails the annual test, you are responsible for repairs or replacement within 30 days. Replacements must comply with:

  • Manatee County Utilities Standards
  • The appropriate assembly type for your property conditions (see Required Backflow Prevention Assemblies below)
  • The lead-free requirements of Section 1417 of the Safe Drinking Water Act (42 U.S.C. 300g-6)

Failure to comply within 30 days will result in water service being discontinued until compliance is achieved. No extensions for testing are permitted.

Additional Information

  • You do not need to be present during the test.
  • If your backflow preventer assembly is not tested within the required timeframe, the County's contract tester will perform the inspection. A minimum charge of $50 per assembly will be billed to the property owner.
