Posted on 08/13/2018

It may be easy for college-bound high school graduates to sketch out their 4-year plan, but what about those who are undecided about the next step in their futures? With the skyrocketing price tag of tuition alone, it's no wonder graduates are seeking out college alternatives. If you've decided for any reason that college just isn't the best next step for you and you're exploring your options, please read on.

Non-Traditional Alternatives
Entering the military or signing up for a Technical School are obvious college alternatives, but have you considered non-traditional pathways? The opportunities an entry-level local government job offers shouldn't be passed over.

One of my colleagues in Human Resources (and many others) at Manatee County Government has built her career from the ground up since just after high school. Tamie Langman is the current HR Development Coordinator with Manatee County and began in her role in the Human Resources Department in 1989. Right after graduation, she opted to take on the job of Office Assistant II in lieu of college. For nearly 30 years, Tamie has dedicated her career to local government and that decision launched her career in Human Resources. Since beginning with the county, she gained valuable work experience, became a certified Human Resources Professional and currently holds two professional designations in her field.

"I chose a career with Manatee County Government due to the incredible benefits package and flexible schedule offered.  It has been wonderful to work with people who have supported growth in my career.  Over the years,  my work relationships have turned into friendships that feel like my second family, " said Tamie.

The Perks
Manatee County Government offers an unbeatable benefits package that includes a unique health plan and generous paid time off including holidays, sick and vacation time. Free onsite fitness center and classes are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the incredible perks that full time employees enjoy. The county is committed to backing their employees' work-life balance and it really shows in their thoughtful benefits package and other employee incentives.

If the price of a college education is what's keeping you from enrolling, you may be able to utilize the tuition assistance program being offered by Manatee County. The program pays up to 80% tuition reimbursement for college-bound full time employees. Restrictions apply, but the perk adds up to smart savings if you plan it just right.
