Boarding the Bus

Buses make scheduled stops only at designated bus stops. As a bus approaches the stop, stand next to the bus stop sign. Ensure the driver sees you by waving to the driver, signaling your intention to board the bus.

If you are unsure about the bus' destination, ask the driver before you board.

Have exact fare or an M Card bus pass ready when you board. Only U.S. coins and currency are accepted and drivers do not carry change.

You may need to take more than one bus to reach your destination. Transfers are 25¢ each. Ask the driver for a transfer after paying your fare. Transfers must be used on the next connecting bus. Like the M Card bus passes, the transfer also has a magnetic stripe on the back that is read when inserted into the slot on the right side of the fare box.

Note: Do not fold, roll, tear, alter, mutilate or get the transfer wet. If the transfer is destroyed or rendered inoperable by the rider, the transfer becomes void and a new paid fare will be required to continue traveling. MCAT drivers are not authorized to allow a customer to ride if the transfer cannot be read by the fare box.

If you are visually impaired, or need help identifying your stop please inform the driver as you enter the bus, so the driver may announce your stop and ensure your exit at the proper time. It is helpful to sit toward the front of the bus if you need assistance.

Wheelchair Accessible

All MCAT buses and trolleys are equipped with wheelchair lifts to accommodate riders who cannot use the steps. At the bus stop, when the bus arrives, follow the driver’s instructions. Move your wheelchair onto the lift, secure brakes and grasp handrails. Once inside, the driver will assist you with securing your wheelchair and safety belts. Discuss your destination with the bus driver who will assist you when leaving the bus or trolley.

Using M Cards and R Cards

M Cards and R Cards have a magnetic stripe on the back that is read when inserted into the fare box. Whether a 1, 7 or 31 Day unlimited ride M Card, a 30 Day unlimited ride R Card or if you have an M Card issued for a special purpose, all cards conveniently print the active dates on the back of the pass.

Activate your M Card or R Card the first time you use it by inserting it into the “slot” on the right side of the top of the fare box. Remember to retrieve your pass before you take a seat. Thereafter, simply swipe your M Card or R Card through the horizontal slot on left side of the top of the fare box to record your fare. Your M Card  or R Card will no longer work after the expiration time/date printed on the back of your fare card. See “Conditions for M Card and R Card Use” under the Fares/Fare Policies section.
