Forestry Program
The Forestry Program of the Environmental Planning Division handles all issues pertaining to trees, including review of Tree Removal Permits and review of “tree preservation & removal/replacement” information provided as part of the development review process performed by the Environmental Review Section.
Staff strives to assist developers and residents to retain trees that are healthy and that consist of appropriate species. Staff also advises on trees that are not appropriate for their location or that are in poor health. [more]
The removal of trees is approved through one of two processes. For existing developments a Tree Removal Permit (TRP) is required. For tree removal & replacement in conjunction with new development, the approval process is through the site plan process. The Urban Forester reviews and approves the TRP and is also involved in review of site plans for new development that propose tree removal & replacement. [more]
The Tree Removal Permit (TRP) which is processed by the Urban Forestry (UF) Manager, many times with assistance from the development reviewing staff, often results from inappropriate species selection or location.
Assisting in the development review, the UF Manager reviews tree species as well as placement on the site to ensure there are no conflicts between trees and proposed infrastructure and improvements. Many times this involves meeting with and discussing options with the applicant, resulting in a feasible planting plan. Issues discussed through this process include signage and building visibility.
An amendment to the Tree Protection Ordinance has been in the works. With the upcoming adoption of this ordinance, many of the past requirements that have caused tree conflicts with infrastructure will be corrected. Also, other issues that involve appropriate species, plant quantities, and sizes will be addressed.
