Threatened & Endangered Species Protection

Image Threatened & Endangered Species Protection

The protection of Threatened & Endangered Species is required by both the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (U.S. F & W S) and Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) regulations. Since these regulations are incorporated into both the County’s Comprehensive Plan and the Land Development Code, they are enforced by the County when development projects are reviewed and approved.

Development Review staff is charged with ensuring Threatened & Endangered Species are protected in accordance with U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (U.S. F & W S) and Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) requirements. These requirements are addressed and implemented through our Comprehensive Plan Goals and Objectives & Policies as well as our Land Development Code requirements.

As part of the development review process, staff requests that the applicant demonstrate that they’ve checked for Threatened & Endangered Species on their site and, if any are found, they are required to obtain permits to address relocating species to an approved off-site location or setting aside habitat on-site to house the species. The requirements of U.S. F & W S or FWC are included as requirements by the County to be fulfilled prior to giving approval for a development project, which ensures compliance.
