More redistricting discussions scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 25
MANATEE COUNTY, FL (Oct. 20, 2011) – Manatee County officials are calling on the people who live and vote here to participate in another round of redistricting discussions next week.
Manatee County Commissioners on Tuesday will take up the County’s proposed redistricting maps during a 10 a.m. discussion on Tuesday, Oct. 25 in the first floor chambers of Manatee County Administrative Building, 1112 Manatee Ave. W. Later in the day, Commissioner Joe McClash will make a lunchtime (12:15 p.m.) presentation on the maps to the Bradenton Kiwanis Club, 1401 21st Avenue West.
“Tuesday’s discussion provides for additional discussion and awareness of the public’s opportunity to be engaged in determining the district boundaries where they live,” said Deputy County Administrator Karen Windon who has coordinated the County’s redistricting process. “The redistricting process is a way to truly get involved in local democracy.”
Manatee County’s five county commission districts are up for debate, some of which have four proposed maps to reflect current and trending population statistics. The Board is expected to have a final vote on the maps in November. The proposed maps are available at www.mymanatee.org/redistricting
Manatee County Geographic Information Systems (GIS) staff used 2010 U.S. Census data to produce drafts of district maps based on population. The GIS team was directed to balance district populations while maintaining as nearly as possible the existing demographic balance. The proposed districts were drawn based on existing districts, and modified based on geographic lines and natural and manmade demarcations.
The proposed districts were reviewed by the Supervisor of Elections to ensure precinct boundaries were kept intact, and then reviewed again, and lines redrawn. The Manatee School District is also participating in this process with a goal of having district boundaries consistent between the two entities.
