Bradenton Beach dedicates new city park to Commissioner John Chappie
MANATEE COUNTY, FL (Oct. 20, 2011) – Manatee County Commissioner John Chappie was given a permanent honor in his home city today when Bradenton Beach City Commissioners unanimously dedicated the city’s new park to his legacy.
The park is located along a four-lot patch in the 1400 block of Gulf Drive North which the city recently purchased. City officials say a small dedication ceremony will be planned in the future.
Chappie is a 38-year resident of Bradenton Beach. He was elected to the City Commission in 1997. In 2001, serving as Mayor of the city, he worked to create a community redevelopment area along Bridge Street which has become one of the most economically successful and viable business districts in the county. In 2008 he was elected to the County Commission to represent District 3 including Anna Maria Island and western Bradenton.
Bradenton Beach Mayor Bob Bartlet thanked Chappie for his steadfast dedication to Bradenton Beach and to Anna Maria over the years as a city and a county commissioner.
“John Chappie has been a stalwart of Bradenton Beach and a pillar of our community for many years,” Bartlet said. “Because of his past and continued service … I feel he should be recognized with an honor commensurate with his years of service.”
Chappie humbly accepted the honor, thanking dozens of audience members who had given him a standing ovation.
“I’ve been truly blessed to live here in Bradenton Beach, on Anna Maria, in Manatee County,” Chappie said.
